That the Indiana Ice of the USHL have signed a two-year extension on their lease at the Pepsi Coliseum. That means no expansion for the IHL in Indy for at least two years.

Is it possible for the IHL to field a team at the Pepsi Center even with the USHL there?

  2. bsebring Says:

    No.

I think this is a major blow to the IHL to expanding next year. Indy is a more important market than putting a team in Chicago next year. The only hope is for Dayton and Cincy to both drop out of the ECHL and join the IHL, if that does not happen the IHL is going to have a tough time finding a market that will support minor league hockey. Port Huron is begging their fans to support their team and they are in second place. I just do not see Port Huron being able to field a team in that market. Toledo is also out since they have committed to the ECHL next season. THe IHL is running out of viable markets to expand to without putting travel hardships on teams.

what have you heard about expansion blake? is there other ice in indy? conseco?

  5. bsebring Says:

No, there’s not. Indy is a done deal and won’t be happening for the IHL.

All six teams WILL be back next season, and possibly Chicago. I’ll have more in a story for Monday’s paper.

There’s a rumor on another board (not the other newspaper board) that Muskegeon is supposedly looking into switching to the USHL next year. Have you heard anything about that, Blake?

Heard today from another person that the lease extention has been proposed but won’t be official until a meeting next month.

Have a young kid in youth hockey here in Indy and the rumor has it the Ice owner is working with a group in Ft.Wayne to bring the USHL to town in 2010. New three sheet facility, one with 3000 seats. IJI
