The latest on Chaulk

April 10, 2006

Unfortunately, there’s not much new. Colin was examined this morning by team doctor Greg Sassmannshausen at Fort Wayne Orthpaedics and an MRI will be done on his leg sometime this week. The leg is healing, but this is a precautionary move, according to Komets General Manager David Franke.

“We need this done the sooner the better because the final playoff roster is due on Monday and we need to know if we have to make other arrangements,” Franke said. “Once they get the MRI done, they can let him know how much he can exercise on it. Right now he’s still on crutches and they don’t want him putting any weight on it.”

Franke said he expects Chaulk to miss the final three games this week and likely the first two games of the first-round playoff series.

If Chaulk is unable to play, the Komets will be scanning the waiver wire to look at picking up another veteran center if possible.

  1. David Says:

If I am reading this correctly and the Frankes will not tip their hand anyway, it sounds to me the chances of Chaulk being ready to play in any of the first round of playoff’s is slim to none. We are not talking a little cut here, this is something that more than likely is effecting the muscle in the region and is more than likely sore as H…!!! If he can not go in the first round but be available beyond that can the K’s activate him off the IR?

  2. blake Says:

I’m not sure I’d read that much into it. They simply don’t know right now, but it’s more they have to be prepared in case he can’t play. Knowing Colin, if it’s at all possible, he’ll try to play.

They can activate him off IR in the playoffs and someone else has to go on.

  3. Teresa Says:

Hopefully Joe and Shawn can fix Chaulker up with one of their inventions so he can play as soon as possible. We really need him. Chaulk is the heart and soul of this team and without him, I’m afraid we’ll lose our momentum and drive. Please hurry back, Colin! We need you…bad!!!

  4. Jungle Monkey Says:

An “invention”? I’ll pass. How bout Chaulker heals and in the off-season we find him the team he deserved to play with this season. I’d love to see Chaulk play this year, but not at the expense of his future.

  5. Nanci Says:

..okay..jungle monkey..what team do you think he should play on?

  6. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

Whew, that one flew over your head Nanci. He was saying that the Komet’s need to get him healthy for our team next year with the concentration of putting together a better group of players.

  7. scoops Says:

Chaulk is not exactly playing with junk. Little short here and there as compared to to some other teams but its still a playoff team. I think if truth be told, its not “better” you want, but more toughness and entertainment in which you hope makes the Komets better. Nothing wrong with that I suppose but lets not ditch the season at hand.

  8. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

The Frankes said that Chaulk would miss part of the first round of playoffs. They said at least 2 weeks he would be out. An MRI may show more damage that would change this optimism to season ending.

Chaulk has said to other media members that he cannot put any weight on the injuried leg and cannot step on it with his tip-toes. A deep cut like he has would be very difficult to recover from this quickly. Is his career worth the risk?

Blake, if we were to pick-up a veteran this week, would he be elgible to play in the playoffs? Any certain number of games played for the Komets or such needed to be elgible? Where in the heck would they pull a good veteran out of their hat from this late in the season anyway?

  9. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

Plus, anybody we find would have to pass waivers, right? Meaning the teams below us in standings have first shot. Right?

  10. scoops Says:

Any more Jamie Milam’s floating around out there?

This report is not the best of news but its still speculation at this point. All this not so good news could also be meant for Rockford to read too and then Chaulker comes out and pulls a Terrell Owens.

  11. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

Hope so. Not Owens though. Hate that guy.

How about the guy for Wisconsin that scored the goal after taking a hard hit, didn’t give up on the play, went straight to the net, and scored. I’m sure he is out of our league, right.

  12. JC Says:

Well if Chaulk is out for the year then we could sign Milam to a regular contract since he’s played in 6 games and then go out and sign 2 more top college guys. I don’t think thats a bad idea. BUT I hope Chaulk is able to play because the K’s deperately need him for the playoffs. I really hope they don’t play him if he isn’t healthy though. I can just see Big Snake or one of the other cheap shot artists on Rockford slashing him in the back of the leg.

  13. Jennifer Says:

Too bad Bakersfield made the playoffs. We could use Venny right now.

  14. blake Says:

If the Komets sign anyone off waivers in the UHL, as long as he’s played six regular-season games he’s eligible for the playoffs. There are always guys available at the waiver deadline because teams want to cut loose guys they don’t want. As for the quality? Who knows? Anything is possible.

As for Venedam, is he even off injured reserve yet? I heard he hurt his shoulder again.

  15. Heather Says:

It would of course be awesome for Chaulk to be able to play but he shouldn’t risk his career. Amen to the Venny comment lol. That would be nice. All joking aside if Chaulk can’t play just make sure to get some who can at least get us somewhere. With Chaulk out who is standing up and being the leader?

  16. blake Says:

I really don’t think that will be a problem. There are lots of leaders in the locker room, and they all realize they need to step it up a little. Don’t forget, playoffs are also the time when someone always steps up and surprises you like Stewy last year playing center or Kean playing forward, or Blake Stewart at the end.

  17. Heather Says:

I’d like to see Guinn step and show all those doubters what he can do. I have season tickets and all I hear every game from the idiots behind me is how much they can’t stand Guinn. It’s not like he’s the worst player on the team. I mean with his plus 22 rating and 36 points he does contribute to the game. Although I know people have their opinions they should look at stats before booing him.

  18. blake Says:

Unfortunately Heather, it’s always been that way. Fans usually turn on defensemen first, whereas a forward can do the same or less and never hear a peep. Shawn Evans, Carey Lucyk, Rob Doyle, Bob Wilkie. I’ll bet I could come up with five more if I looked them up.

  19. Heather Says:

So what are your thoughts on Guinn? I mean as a fan do you think he does a good job or do you think that we should dump him? I’d like to know your thoughts on how well he does.

  20. blake Says:

That’s a trick question from Hit Somebody, right? LOL. I’m not a fan, but I have a lot of respect for what Rob does to play the game and how he plays the game. I think he and Mike Dombkiewicz have been an outstanding pairing of late. Rob’s going to play every game, be plus-25 or so and set a career-high for points, along with being a great leader. Can’t ask for more than that. I know his teammates respect him a ton as well.

  21. Heather Says:

Actually for that matter what is everybody’s thought on Guinn?

  22. Heather Says:

I wasn’t saying that you were a fan of Guinn I was meaning a fan of the Komets. I’m not a fan of Guinns but I do think that he does a good job. I certainly wouldn’t boo him. There are only a select few players that I would boo and they certainly aren’t the ones on the team now. I give them a lot of credit for going out there and doing their best to make the fans proud.

  23. Tony E Says:

I am on record as a supporter of Guinn. As I have said in the past, he has his flaws as everyone in the league does or they would not be in the UHL. As a UHL defenceman, he is as steady and reliable as you can get. Some fans want him to be a Scott Stevens type and that isn’t his game. I think he has done a fine job for the Komets playing his style.

  24. David Says:

    Blake:

Venny is back and playing for Bakersfield after being on the 30 day IR.

  25. blake Says:

Heather, I was kidding because Hit Somebody keeps saying I’m a fan when I’m not, that’s all. I’m not a fan of the Komets. I can’t be to do my job well. That doesn’t mean I don’t respect and get along well with the players, coaches, management, etc., though. I’d rather see them win because it makes my job easier, but I still have to do it if they lose. It’s just different.

  26. Heather Says:

That would make sense sorry about that and a great job you do following the Komets.

  27. blake Says:

Not a problem. Just making sure Hit Somebody wasn’t trying to trip me up. LOL.

  28. Tony E Says:

Now Blake, thinking Hit would try to trip you up would mean that we are applying logic to the things Hit does and says…….
JUST KIDDING HIT!!!!! 😉 (see I don’t umpire for a day and I get all happy lol)

  29. blake Says:

Nah, Hit isn’t sneaky enough to try something like that, now would he?

  30. Jungle Monkey Says:

Blake is only a fan of Ryan Jorde… 🙂

  31. dnlkomets Says:

I’m a fan of Guinn. He has his pros and cons like anyone else. I appreciate his game record and the Komets are stronger for him. Not every team has a player like Guinn, and he deserves a veteran spot on the roster. And to what you said Blake, I agree fans are always harder on defensemen. But as I’ve always heard, offense brings the fans, defense wins the games.

  32. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

I’m a fan of Blake’s. Thanks Heather for throwing that slick one in on Blakester. I’ll give a 5 spot for that Friday night. Just come see me. He almost said it too! Made him think though. A first….joking.

You know you guys would be damn bored if I didn’t stir the pot sometimes. It makes for interesting blogging. Just like Enema Man, he makes for interesting “un-clogging” and he definitely can fill the pot.
    What?

  33. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

I am reading on another Komet blog site, sorry JC, that the possibilities of Chaulker coming back this year are slim and none, and I just saw slim get hit by a Jorde left hook. He had the MRI today and they couldn’t even get a good read on it because he is so swollen. He is in tons of pain, cannot walk on it, and is unable to put any weight on it yet. The Frankes are still saying game 3 of the first round as a possible return. Chaulker is definitely not saying that from what I am hearing. Drouin and Luciuk are both preparing to move up a line to make-up for Chaulk not playing. We are still in need of a Veteran impact center.

Here is a question to all for shats and giggles:
Who on a non-playoff team would you like to see the Komets acquire on waivers, if that particular guy was waived.

I know this is dreaming some…but play the what if game, for fun.

  34. blake Says:

Why don’t we give it a day or two before jumping off a cliff? We don’t know anything today that we didn’t know yesterday. Even if the MRI had been perfect today, there’s no way Chaulk would have been able to work out before Monday anyway, so what is lost right now? Nothing. You know if there’s anyway he can go, Colin will go.

  35. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

I know Blake, it just seems that time is the problem here. If it would have happended to him 5 weeks ago, we probably wouldn’t be having this conversation. It just seems like it is going to be tough to come back so soon. We aren’t talking a scratch are we? He was wounded in bad place for someone who SKATES.

I’ll answer my own question since you don’t like to have fun Blake. LOL….I have 4 guys in mind to acquire, here is the first:

    Jason Sessa Elmira 52gm 21g 33a 54pts

  36. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

    Number 2:
    Jim Duhart Missouri 53gm 26g 30a 56pts

  37. Heather Says:

As much as we’d benefit from Duhart I’d still have to boo him. He is my most hated player. Sorry.

  38. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

He is one of those guys that you hate against you, love when he is one of yours. It would be the weirdest things in the world to see him in a Komet’s Uniform, wouldn’t it? Would he still blow kisses into the crowd after scoring a goal?

  39. Heather Says:

I remember one game I sat in the front row we were playing flint. I remember him blowing me kisses because I was holding a Duhart sucks sign. LOL. I wanted to get sick. I guess I can’t say that if he were on our team I’d still boo him depends on what he did for us. I would be weird though.

  40. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

He’d do what he does everywhere he plays….that is score, score, score and drive the other team nuts. And their crowd, too! I remember 2 years ago when he played for Flint and He scored 3 goals and I think he had 3 or 4 assists too. I was so mad that game. He killed us, and no one bothered to lay a body on him.

  41. Heather Says:

So who is your favorite player?

  42. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

I’d have to say Kelly Miller. I just like his effort. I know he isn’t the best player on the team, but he always hustles. He does a lot of the little things that go un-noticed. Faceoffs, penalty killing, etc. There are other guys a really like, too, but those are the guys that I think everyone likes.

  43. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

    Number 3 guy to acquire:
    Mike Wiggins RV 49gm 31g 24a 55pts

    Deja Vu all over again?

  44. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

    Number 3 player to acquire:
    Mike Wiggins RV 49gm 31g 24a 55pts

    Deja Vu all over again?

  45. Heather Says:

My husbands favorite is Kelly Miller. My mom works at the coliseum and we’ve gotten her into hockey and her fav is P.C. lol.

  46. Heather Says:

My husband likes Kelly Miller. My mom works at the coliseum and we got her into hockey her fav is P.C.

  47. Heather Says:

wow that was weird sorry about that lol

  48. Heather Says:

I’m not sure but I think my mom knows you.

  49. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

    Player number 4 to acquire:

    Terry Marchant Flint 74gm 28g 52a 80pts.

  50. Tony E Says:

Hit I have a question about your list. Do any of those guys fight??? If not I am not sure the Komets would want to bother with them. The key to a long Komets run would be to bring back Jeff Worlton!!

  51. David Says:

Tony that is the first logical thing you have ever posted…lol

  52. blake Says:

Am I going to have to get rough with you guys? How many times have I told you, logic has absolutely nothing to do with hockey or Hit Somebody!

  53. Tony E Says:

Lol I am trying! I really am!

  54. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

    Funny boys. Funny!!!
I have never said that we need a bunch of guys who fight. Just a guy or two with enough courage to stand up when needed. I’m not in the minority on this. And Blake, you don’t count anymore, you aren’t a fan.
