The season is over

April 28, 2006

And good riddance. This was one of the strangest years I’ve seen with the Komets. No matter how hard they tried, the pieces just didn’t seem to fit. They played hard tonight, but Rockford played just a little bit harder. Rockford got all the bounces in this series because the IceHogs earned them.

More to come later.

Thanks for a Great… trying to make the pieces of the puzzle fit??? 43 players have been on the Komet roster this year??? I think the first two that they need to sign are Chaulker and Kelly Miller! It’s anybody’s guess after that………….. Just to little to late for this season, Oh well, end of season party should be next week sometime!

  2. Tony E Says:

From the lows early on to the highs of mid season to the lows at the end. This has been an aggravating yet fun season.
This could be worse. We looked like Missouri or Roanoke at the start of the year. The pieces never fit but at least the Frankes tried to correct the mistakes and gave Fort Wayne another competitive team. I look forward to seeing what happens next year.

  3. Harbz Says:

Man was this one crazy year! I just have to say thanks to all the komet players for giving all their heart and desire during this season. They might not have won every game but they tried their hardest to due this city proud and I thank them for that. It was hard to watch them fall short as they did this year, but this could have been a lot worse then what it was. I hope to see alot of them again next and for those that move on I wish them all the luck to having great futures. Here’s to the 2005-2006 Fort Wayne Komets. Thanks for the memories! GO KOMETS!!!!!

  4. Mark Says:

another long summer with no cup starts lol..jk..I know we can’t win every year..but I can’t sleep because I’m so very disappointed.

This is the first time the Komets have been ousted in the 1st round in the UHL…that in itself is truely aggravating…

how much does anyone guess that Coach will be back next season?

  5. Heather Says:

    Amen to that.

  6. blake Says:

Party is Tuesday at 6:30 in Appleseed room.

  7. Heather Says:

Well we all need to make sure we go out and show them how much we support them win or lose. That’s what any true fan would do. Hope to see a lot of you there.

  8. Emily Says:

Lets have a big turnout at the party on Tuesday, show our appreciation for all of their hard work throughout this season of highs and lows!!!!

  9. Komets PA Says:

Thanks to all the fans for this season. It’s been a long rough season with more ups and downs than a bad soap opera. I’m finishing off a beer and dreading the next 5 months without hockey and the joy that the roar of the fans bring into my life. You all are great, and even though we didn’t get a ring this season, at least we arent the Cubs. Thank you all, and I wish we had a chance to do all the fun things we had planned for Saturday nights game. Oh well! We’ll regroup and try to give you the best we can next year. Have a great summer and we’ll see you in the fall or at least this Tuesday night. Now, who am I going to have bag on me for the next few months now that the season is over…Blake?????
    Have a safe summer!!

  10. Tony E Says:

Blake let me be the first to publicly thank you for the time and effort you have put into this blog. You already worked too many hours before you took on this project and I am sure none of us take for granted the time you spent posting and interacting with us. Thank you for giving us a quality forum to get news and rumors and to vent and cheer. It has made this tough season enjoyable.

  11. Skate Says:

    Blake ==

Thanks for all the work you have done on the board this year.

  12. Heather Says:

I’d say a big thanks to all who are involved with the komets but with bad coaching and bad management its just not possible. So thanks to everybody else.

  13. Tony E Says:

Ok, let me stir this a little. Even if I agree that this team was not put together very well at the start, does one bad season = bad management? These are not my Maple Leafs who have not smelled a cup since 1967. This management group has put winning teams on the ice that had at least a chance to contend more often than not. Did they do their best work this year? Probably not. But I think they have earned some benefit of the doubt. I would bet they make corrections for next season. History says that the Frankes learn from their mistakes. I believe that they will continue to bring quality hockey to Fort Wayne.

  14. Tony E Says:

And when I say “bad season” they did end up with the 6th best record in the league. We as fans are lucky that the standards set by the Frankes make that a bad season.

  15. Mark Says:

Heather your killing me over here lol…

again I can’t say it was a great season..a great season ends with the Cup..they had a decent season..all the ups and downs..they remained competitive…

Now I hope management pulls thier collective heads out and gives us a team to be proud of..I can’t say other than a couple of the players..I’m real proud of this team..

    with that said..

Thanks Blake for doing this blog..
And all the things you posted for me about my son….it was all greatly appreciated..

  16. Ross Says:

Blake – thanks for your time and effort to keep this going.

Larry – great job on the PA all season.

  17. Heather Says:

How can you not be supportive of the whole team? Who are the ones you don’t support? And why am I killing you? Do you think I don’t know what I’m talking about?

  18. Mark Says:

you said bad coaching and management..enough said…

Do I support the whole team yes, but at the same time, I am very disappointed in most of them, I expected more. namely Drouin and Jorde..these 2 players IMO, needed to step up in the absence of Chaulker and Neumey..neither did.

  19. Heather Says:

Well IMO the whole team needed to step it up they let them score 22 goals this series how messed up is that. So if it isn’t bad coaching and management who is it? The players….the fans…..give me a break.

  20. Tony E Says:

I think we may find out a few of these guys were playing hurt. All teams hide injuries this time of year. But the Komets didn’t have any depth due to the injuries of Chaulk and Newm.

  21. Mark Says:

whoa slow down heather…I’m not going against you..

the defense was bad.. thats what it was..when you are missing 2 of your best defensive are gonna have major problems..

  22. Mark Says:

Tony E..totally agreed..I think that right there lyes with the Frankes and bad management and not realizing tha and making am a move at the deadline..they needed more depth and they didn’t go get it..

  23. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

Thanks Blake…AKA Super Fan. I have got onto your blog site every night that it has been in existance this year. Wow…I just admitted that? Oh well, it has been fun. Hope that everyone realizes that some of my rants were only to stir it up rather than tick everyone off. Thanks to all the bloggers who have made the debates on here fun. Remember one thing about this season that Enema Man told me…Hockey is like a crap sandwich…the more Bread you have, the less crap we have to eat. Not sure how that works with this team…but it sounded good. Hope to see Chaulker, Venedam, Goodwin on the #1 line next year with Kelly Miller on the #2 line. Another off-season of looking for big physical scoring forwards ought to keep us well entertained. Keep us all informed Blakester.

  24. Heather Says:

You know I’m not going to sit here and say that the coach and management are always bad because we have been good years before but it just so happened this season there was something definitely wrong there. Did coach reall say if we lose blame him? If so that there qualifies as bad coaching.

  25. Tony E Says:

Larry I would like to thank you as well and I would also like to give a shout out to Scott Sprout. A class individual whose innovative ideas made every Komets game I attended this year even more entertaining and enjoyable.

  26. Tony E Says:

Hit unless Venny gets divorced, I don’t think he is coming back here.

  27. Mark Says:

Your right heather, they aren’t always bad, this year was just a bad year, nothing worked it seemed. They made moves to try and improve this team, but in the end, it was nearly good enough..back to the old drawing board as they say..hopefully, it a lot better this time around

  28. Heather Says:

He’s coming to visit this summer.

  29. Mark Says:

thats suppose to say not nearly good enough…lol oops..i need to go to bed

  30. Mark Says:

I think venny works with Chaulker in his hockey school…maybe chaulker can talk him into playing here again…

  31. Heather Says:

Well glad that worked out I’d hate to have to drop the gloves with you. LOL.

  32. Heather Says:

    Venedam is helping Chaulkers.

  33. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

    Wishing…only wishing.

  34. Tony E Says:

Mark you may be right though they got Domber around the deadline and I believe he was a more than pleasant surprise.
Folks I would look to moving younger next year. I personally hope they check out the large number of undrafted players coming out of the OHL and the Quebec League and get some hungry 21-22 year olds in town who have aspirations of moving up and with something to prove.

  35. Tony E Says:

Now now, nobody upset Heather or Hit Somebody might live up to his nickname!! 😉
    Just kidding guys.

  36. Heather Says:

Its funny we don’t really know each other but he would stick up for me. LOL. Thanks sweetie.

  37. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

    Uh……..Oh I get it……

  38. Mark Says:

boy heather…I’m not sure I could hit a woman…you would probably beat me up..because I refuse to hurt a woman..

  39. Heather Says:

well then that settles it I win. LOL

  40. Mark Says:

    Tony E..

Domber was an excellent pick up..I’d like to see him back next season. He wasn’t a trade deadline pick up..he was a waiver wire pick up, which the Frankes worked like majic this season..which is why, they need to do thier homework in the summer, and they don’t have to pick up any other teams dirty laundry

  41. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

tell that to a certain Rockford player Mark…

  42. Mark Says:

Hit..I’m confused…what the heck are you talking about

  43. Tony E Says:

Lol Hit, a little slow tonight? lol
I really believe that they need to be unafraid to make some big time changes. I believe NOBODY on this team is untouchable. You may say I am nuts, that you don’t get rid of Chaulk etc. Well, I say that all depends on what you would get in exchange. This team lost in the first round. While I would like to see some of these guys back, if it takes trading one of them or letting a popular vet go in order to bring in some new young talent, maybe that is the way to go. Personally I would like to see Chaulk retire a Komet and would of course like to see him back. I just don’t think any of them should go to sleep tonight assuming they earned a return contract.

  44. Mark Says:

none that played tonight..correct…Chaulk hasn’t played in weeks…I’m not sure what the Komets record is since he went down..but I’m pretty sure it’s not that great…4 wins I think..Chaulk is a huge part of this team, and a player that the Komets should build around

  45. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

Mark, who was the guy who took his jersey off and waved it after fighting Jorde? He allegedly was bailed out of jail by his wonderful coach in the past couple of weeks for beating up his girlfriend/wife and also it was reported that the same model citizen broke into a woman’s house and committed alleged crimes. Lots of links are out there, and lots of people at the games during the week were talking about it. Nice fellow he is.

  46. Bob Says:

Dear Fellow Bloggers…..I like the rest of you are disappointed with the team not getting out of the first round, but; let’s remember just a few months ago everyone did not think the K’s would even make the playoffs. We are very fortunate to be able to say that this community has had a team for 54 seasons, the same ownership for 16 years, an excellent venue to play in…the MC is a great building (I hope to look that good when I’m 54!!!) Yes, there will be changes to the team, that is the nature of the business. But it gives all of us something to look forward to over the summer and that really is part of the fun of Komet Hockey….the anticipation of things to come and at least for me…..the wonderful memories, the friends that I have made over the years, the stories to share with others….the things that live on after our time is done. Blake, I too want to thank you for hosting this blog. I have enjoyed being able to chat with you and everyone else on this forum. I hope that you will continue it next season and maybe be able to give some updates over the summer. If you or anyone else would like to chat with me over the summer and talk about hockey I would be delighted to chat with you. Let’s give the team a nice send off at the party Tuesday and have a super summer….see you all in October!

  47. Jungle Monkey Says:

Where are the Jorde apologists now?

Thanks to Galbraith, Miller, and Goodwin. They worked hard every night and kept my season tickets from going unused.

Thanks to Blake for giving us a platform to express our opinions…. even if they differ from the moral compass steered by Tony and Greg. No hard feelings guys.

Let’s work on getting some quality defense and a tough guy or two for next year.

    Peace out Komet fans!

  48. Tony E Says:

Jungle it would be more correct to say that YOUR opinions differ…….
Opinions are like dirty socks. Most of us have too many of them.

No moral compass. I never tell anyone how to act or what to do.
But that doesn’t mean I can’t comment on it. Just as others can comment on my actions. I am comfortable with my behaviour both on this blog and when I come down to Fort Wayne as a paying patron. I believe my behaviour represents a city that I care very much about. If others want to represent themselves and the city in a different way that is their right as long as laws are not being broken.
Me moral? Giggle. My better half would laugh her head off if she saw me being accused of that lol.

  49. Kometsrock Says:

I’ve only got one thing to say after reading all the posts!

The Komets are the best entertainment we have in town…. Thanks to Blake for his extra work on the blog. Thanks to the Frankes for keeping OUR hockey team here. And last but not least by any means, THANKS to the TEAM. Other than Blake :0), do all of us do our best every day at work? These guys gave it their all…

  50. David Says:

Thanks to those who shared my views most of the time, Hit, Skate, Chukcitt, etc.. and to those who did not…WE have a great hockey club with a great place to watch a game, but now it is time for the Clubs to come out and time for this organization to bring a team in that is younger and plays a rugged style. Blakes article sums it up well you just can not play a rugged style at the flip of the switch it has to happen night in and night out. As for the vet’s I would not fill all the vet spots I would rather see tweeners and rookies. WE could use a few from the OHL and I will take a chaz Johnson and a Big Snake…..Peace

  51. Greg Says:

Blake, Thanks for working hard on this blog all year, it’s been a pleasure to read all the differing views, beliefs, and feelings. And even though I don’t agree with them all, it’s gratifing to have a place to state tem.
Jungle Monkey-No hard feelings here either. Most likely I’ll forget most of what was said in here by June.
It sounds likethis will be a very interesting off season. I will be looking in constantly to see what changes the Frankes have in mind.

  52. Tony E Says:

Good morning all. You know, much of the season, this blog was more entertaining than the team! lol. Everyone here is great (even those who are wrong ERRRRRRRRRR have opinions that differ from mine lol just kidding folks)
No worries. I have the Gary Glitter song here and anytime someone says something I don’t like, I hit the play button and scream “you suck!” lol

  53. Dave Says:

You guys are fortunate to have such a successful franchise that is in contention almost every year. The Rockford fans have been waiting years for this team and there isn’t a single fan here with a nail left to bite, hopefully they will grow back by the next round.

  54. have a nice summer ks fans Says:

i agree blake, wierd season for sure! i definately think
the team needs to get younger
    and more enthusiastic next
year. tony e and david were right they need to scout the major junior canadian leagues
    better, evidently rockford
did a helluva job with scouting, 9 rookies. the ks
cant just sign the same ole
vets year in and year out
    and then throw in players
    from other clubs like roanoke
and motor city to fill out the
    roster, as for the coach???
i dont deny his success at this level and that he is a
nice guy but i am ready for
    a change behind the bench.
    anyone with me on that?
    have a nice summer y”all!
    i guess i will turn into a
k-wings fan for the rest of the year and drive up to
kzoo and cheer on the wings.
hopefully they can win the cup!!!

  55. chuckitt Says:

blake, thanks for the year! the blog was a great idea. now that the season is over we can all overlook our differences and know that we are all komet fans and are looking to always improve, its just that some have different ideas than others! i for one will root for rockford to win cause they play the game the way i like it. physical play mixed in with finesse. im sure the ks dug themselves such a hole in the beginning that trying to patch it up with the available castoffs was the only option, its just a bad wasy to go. next year is starting already and whether we change coaches or bring back the same vets, the new year starts now. our biggest fault this year is that our rookies and tweeners just didnt fit in with our vets. yu cant overlook vets like dupuis, neumeire, chaulk druin and st pierre. id sign them all up again! add luciuk to that if you can, but its the supporting cast which makes the difference, so lets hhope the boys do their homework and get us back to the top. one or two bad years out of 16 isnt bad people!! go komets!!!! have a great summer and save some budweiser for me!!!!

  56. scoops Says:

Well no that the season is over its time to pay some thanks. Thanks to the Komets for turning it around this year and giving it a shot in the playoffs. Appreciated the effort you all put into this season. Thanks to Blake for having this blog to express ourselves. Sometimes we all don’t agree but in our own sort of twisted way of saying things….we all have one common agenda and that is wanting the best team in the UHL.
Hopefully next season will be different from start to finish and we will not be doing these “thank you’s” so early in the spring. You all have been great to agree and disagree with this season. Hopefully I will see some of you guys/gals around the Fort this summer. Take care and have a great offseason.

  57. Skate Says:

    Blake —

Excellent article today, you make important and correct points. I know this to be true, because I have been saying the same things for years.

I have to wonder how many quality players just won’t come here any more because, as you said, it’s definitely Puhalski’s team and if you don’t play his system, you don’t play.

We simply had no answer for ANY of Rockford’s tough guys: Big Snake, Johson, Tibbetts, Watson, Voltera. Either with the gloves on or off.

Puhalski (and D. Franke) refuse to recuit players of this style. Fine, but we all saw the result this year. I’ve held season tickets for maybe 35 years. I grew up on Komets hockey. I used to live and die with the team.

Not any more. For the last 6 years, my interest has fallen every year. Last season I hesitated before renewing my tickets, but fell for the old line that “this year things will be different.”

I see Puhalski is signed thru next year. Great. (NOT) Either he (and D. Franke) change the way they go about putting a team together and give us some AGGRESSIVE hockey or they’re going to lose a season ticket holder.

  58. Skate Says:

    Note to CHUCKITT:

There is not enough Budweiser in the world to satisfy you.

Even though the season is over, I will not forget my differences.

    I still hate you all.

  59. Jungle Monkey Says:

Skate, I couldn’t have said it better myself.

    Die Blog Scum!

  60. Tony E Says:

  61. Emily Says:

Just adding my 2 cents, I agree with Tony E.
I talked with several of the players after the game Thursday night, MANY were banged up, bruised, Guy had stitches on his chin, a few were limping or walking gingerly,a couple with black eyes, that doesn’t cover all of the unseen injuries?? I do believe they gave it their all for the games!!! Thanks to Blake and Justin for all of their hard work and hours they devote to provide all of us with information and an outlet for our joys and frustrations!!! This goes out to “HIT SOMEBODY” I sign on as Emily (aka: Heather’s MOM…..) Everyone have a great summer, I have truly enjoyed reading everyones comments, ideas, rant’s & raves. finally A GREAT BIG THANKS to all of the KOMET PLAYERS, and the ENTIRE KOMET ORGANIZATION for allowing Fort Wayne to have a team we can root for and TRULY be PROUD of………See you Tuesday night at the party!!!!!

  62. Tony E Says:

Oh Boy Hit is in trouble now!!!!!!!

  63. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

  64. Tony E Says:

Lol you know I am just playing around right?

  65. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

I only have a special place for Enema Man…

  66. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

Ouch!!! Not so hard… that Enema Man sure is a pain in the ARSE!!!

  67. JR Says:

Take it easy everybody, this was fun this year on this blog. I will sit back and wait for the Frankes to bring in a coach that Pulhalski was supposed to be when they brought him in all those years back… We will ahve a steady diet of small forwards till that day. So here is to hoping that the K’s will wake up and put a team together in the mold of Rockford, Kzoo, etc… and I hope you all have a safe summer…Thanks Blake

  68. Teresa Says:

I’d like to give a big thanks to Blake for putting this blog together for us this season. As someone else said, this has been as much fun and caused as much excitement as the actual games this season! We all know it took a lot of time and effort on your part, so thanks for giving us a space to speak our minds and allow us to rant and rave about this team we love so much. Despite my disappointment in this year’s playoff team, I’ll be back here rooting for them next season, just like every other year. Best wishes to all the Komet players and management staff. Get well soon Chauker and Neumie so you can be back next season! I also want to wish my fellow bloggers a great summer and hope to see them back on this blog back next fall. See you then!
