Passing the Torch

June 28, 2006

I just saw where the Boston Bruins fired coach. The PERFECT replacement would be John Torchetti who lives in Boston, speaks Boston, IS Boston. I’ll bet he knows as much or more about the Bruins’ players as the team’s current management because he watches every game.

He’d also be perfect because the city is down on the team, the star players such as Thornton and Samsonov have left and they are desperate for a winner. Don’t those circumstances sound awfully familiar?

Torch is great at turning situations around. Lord knows he’s had to do it enough. He brings emotion, stability, fire, plus, very important in this situation, he knows how to work with young players.

Reports are today that former Red Wings assistant Dave Lewis is going to be the new coach. Former Komet Bob Essensa is also an assistant with the Bruins.

I heard Essensa on the Toronto station yesterday morning talking about Raycroft who the Leafs acquired. Either he is a great actor or he had no clue this was coming. Sullivan got a bad deal. Next to Chicago that is the worst run organization in the NHL right now.

Problem is that he got two chances, one with Florida and another with Los Angeles. I think one day he’ll be signed on for the long term, but I don’t see it in Boston.
Even though his track record is okay, I don’t think it’s enough.

  3. TONY E Says:

He came into two no win situations late into seasons where losing was already the accepted trend in the room. The Kings played respectable hockey for him. I am sure he will get a look. I am just glad Ted
    Nolan finally got another shot.

Torchetti is a good coach. Hopefully, like Nolan, he will get another chance with a GOOD NHL team.

Tony, I agree the Bruins and Blackhawks seem to be CLUELESS. Until this year, I would have put the Rangers in that category too. At least they made the playoffs before blowing up in the first round, although Jagr’s injury had a lot to do with that.

Even though I have long been a die-hard Canadiens fan, I like to see any of the Original Six teams do well. I wanted Edmonton to win the Stanley Cup over a southern team, but I remembered Carolina used to be the Hartford and New England Whalers. The only former WHA team that hasn’t won a Stanley Cup is Phoenix (Winnipeg).

That didn’t take long. Former Detroit Red Wing coach has been named coach of the Bruins. With something that fast I think something fishy is going on.
Any takers on Torchetti not even getting a look?

  6. Greg Says:

Sorry, that should have read Dave Lewis former Detroit Red Wing Coach.

    Fast finger disease strikes again.

  7. Blake Says:

He’s a friend of the new GM. No other sport is more about who you know.

  8. David Says:

Saw where Ed Campbell was placed on waivers and then claimed by Elmira…
