Some of coach Bingham’s philosophy

October 4, 2006

“A lot of guys tried to give the coach what he wants, and that’s good to see. There won’t be tough decisions. Nobody hurt their chances.

“I’m essentially trying to re-program these guys to play within a system. It’s my vision to start with but eventually it will be the way all of our guys see the game, and the options within it. Rookies and veterans alike. …

“Arthur Kiyaga is not big in stature, but boy, he’s a guy who tried to do and basically execute everything we’ve asked him to the last two or three days. There’s other guys who give you very little of it, and that part disappoints. I notice, and it means something. Sometimes less is more. A guy gives you exactly what you want, that’s what we’re striving for. Other guys might have a little more talent, a little more experience, but they are not listening, and they give you none of it, it’s going to be a tough road for that person, and it’s not going to work on our team.

“I’m trying to break people down to build a system and build a team. We’re team-building right now. It’s very important if you want to have success.

“That’s a big part of my evaluation process. … All these things are asked for. They are noticed when they do them and when they don’t do them. We’re making our checklist. You have to buy in. It takes a while. Some people will buy in immediately, make some mistakes, but eventually get it. Others will refuse to buy in. It goes against their nature to be unselfish and sacrifice. Those are the guys who eventually will fall by the wayside.”

Think any of the players could read or hear this and not get the message?

Is it just me or is the ghost of Puhalski still lingering through the halls of the Coliseum? haha

  2. Teresa Says:

Absolutely not, dnl. It was so refreshing to see Coach Bingham actually speaking to and giving directions to his players on the bench during last night’s game. His hands were actually moving showing them what to do, can you imagine that? And when it was all over, he stood on the ice and gave high fives to all the guys as they came off the ice. The ghost of Puhalski is long gone!

  3. Hoss Says:

Teresa, I think dnl ment some of the players that were under Puhalski are being asked to “re-program” how they play and look at the game.

Blake, I know you won’t come out and say who, but do you know the player Bingo is talking about? It must be one of the returning players for last years team that hasn’t dropped the GQ style.

  4. Greg Says:

Tony-what did you think of the Sens-Leafs game last night and the big question, should Sundin have gotten a penalty shot?

  5. blake Says:

I would just prefer to see how this player(s) respond on Friday and Saturday to what he’s asking for because I know he’s going to sit down today with them to explain it. That’s when it will really be interesting. He’s not just saying this stuff to the media hoping the players hear about it. I’m trying to be fair to the player(s) as well.

  6. hobo Says:

aww come on blake call him out…

  7. Tony E Says:

Greg, hopefully this is not a sign of things to come for the Leafs. The penalty shot should not have been awarded because he got off a decent shot. The Leafs skated with Ottawa but the problem was finishing. They had several good scoring chances they whiffed on. But it is only one game and win or lose I don’t think you can read too much into one game.

As for the coach and him wanting guys to play into his system, that is normal.
All coaches have a system they have to have the players buy into.

  8. dnl Says:

I know that all coaches have their own systems of playing hockey, that’s the coach’s job. Puhalski said almost the same thing last year early on in the season and was bashed unrelentlessly for it with only poor Komet Warrior to defend him. That is what I’m refering to.

  9. Tony E Says:

    I remember that LOL

  10. Jason Says:

Wow, I was very impressed with the whole team! I thought Coach was great, It is very refreshing to see a guy behind the bench that actually seems to know there is a hockey game going on! I thought Morency was awesome, very smart move to not fight, but get the other guy to go into the penalty box too to avoid a powerplay. I hope he always plays like that, very impressive. By the way, I saw Kevin Bertram there last night dressed in a suit and tie, and sitting with the players any word on wether he may or may not be wanting to come back?

  11. JungleMonkey Says:

Bertram? Let’s hope not. Unless its the Bertram Versoion 1.0 before he forgot how to hit.

  12. Greg Says:

I doubt it. Wasn’t he playing hurt before he went full time with the fire department?

  13. Tera Says:

wasnt’ there a player that either blake or justin mentioned reminded them of bertram? Prolly that person.

  14. Jason Says:

Does everyone think I’m an idiot. I know who Kevin Bertram is.

  15. Skate Says:

    I have a question:

During our power plays, we had a guy standing right in front of the goal?!?

    Is this allowed?

I never saw it during the last 6 seasons.

    Please, someone clarify. Thanks you.

  16. Jason Says:

it is apparently something new that Coach Bingham has invented.

  17. JungleMonkey Says:

Skate, that was funny. I read it twice thinking you were an idiot like that Jason guy who doesn’t know who Bertram is..

Btw Jason, I seen Bert there too.

  18. Jason Says:

Thanks for backing me up on that one JM!!

  19. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

    I saw Bert too….LOL

I thought Blakes lectured me about a week ago for making a wise-crack about GQ….now it seems to be just fine and dandy. Next thing you know old Enema Man will come out of retirement and will be the talk of the town.

Playing in front of the net was a sin under the GQ “System.” Powerplays were only allowed in the corners and from the blue-line. I noticed that guys seemed to move the puck up the ice and out of the zone alot better than the past 6 years, too. I even yelled once last night really loud when we iced the puck and when we let up that short-handed goal “Way to Go Guinn!!!” Everyone in the section about lost it. I guess I am not the only one.

  20. blake Says:

No, Hit, I got on you for calling the man names for no purpose. I have no problem if someone wants to express opinions or points, but to call a man names for nothing other than calling someone names is wrong. It’s too easy to do anonymously and I don’t want it on my blog.

  21. komets13 Says:

Blake did you get a chance to see Matt Syroczynski in practice today at all? I really like the size he brings and the fact he was in both an NHL and AHL camp, you would think he has some talent. I was just curious if Bingham told you anything about him at all. Thanks in advance.

  22. blake Says:

Nothing yet. I wasn’t able to get to practice today because of other responsibilities.

  23. EneMan Says:

Am I the only one thinking that this person is Huk or am I just full of it?

  24. Skate Says:

Does this mean you can call people names on the blog if you have a purpose in mind?

  25. Top_shelf Says:

I heard Duhart was at the game Wendsday. Anyone see him ?

  26. hobo Says:

yah he was sweeping the stands after the game…

  27. komets10 Says:

    Blake…how serious is Gabrielsen’s injury?

  28. ilovehockey Says:

Yes, that definately was Bertram at the game. We questioned the same thing. It was just kind of unusual seeing him in a suit, then sitting with the other players. Maybe he had a date and was just talking to Frenchy.

  29. blake Says:

Try it and see, skate. LOL.

Gabrielson was walking around on his ankle after the game. He didn’t think it was very serious.

  30. Tony E Says:

Skate feel free to tell me I know it all. LOL

  31. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

I called The Chief…GQ and Cardboard cutout and that is why I got blasted by you. How is that any different from everyone else? Blake sure is getting grumpy in his elder age. LOL Can I still call you Super Fan? I mean that is what Chaulker called you….
