One game for Rudenko

October 25, 2006

The league just ruled. He’ll sit out Friday’s game against Rockford.

Here’s what he said earlier today about the hit:

“The rage took over and I couldn’t think,” Rudenko said, laughing.

Then he got serious: “I saw an opportunity, and I couldn’t stop
myself. It’s one of those things. Hopefully soon we’ll find out what
happens, possibly one or two games hopefully and not more. I turned
around, and what are you going to do? I probably shouldn’t have done
it, but it is what it is.”

    So nothing for Richardson?

  2. Tony E Says:

Predictable for th UHL and I suppose good enough. Hopefully lesson learned not just for him but the rest of the team as well.

  3. Greg Says:

Weak ruling in my opinion. This will be interseting to see how Komet fans take thins news.

This says to me that the UHL (or any league for that matter)is not truthful in wanting to take this type of play out of the game. I wish they would be at least honest about it.

  4. Blake Says:

    Nothing for Richardson.

  5. Greg Says:

    At least there’s that.

  6. JungleMonkey Says:

    Punishment=Crime

  7. Burgee Says:

The only difference between Rudenko and the other guy was that he got caught.

    IMO 1 game too many.

  8. Blake Says:

He was expecting two games so how could it be one game too many? If the guy who actually delivered the hit says that, then you’ve got to take off the rose-colored glasses.

  9. Komet Fan Says:

The suspension was what I expected. 1 game seems fair to me, given the state of inconsistency in the UHL….

  12. Jerad Shaw Says:

I agree with the Suspension. At some point though, The Mallard takes some responsibility to cause he lowered his head due to not being able to handle the puck. Its alright, Lets have HOG ROAST on Friday!!!!

  13. stratocaster718 Says:

Burgee, there’s a big difference. Otten hit Rudenko front-to-front. Rudenko plowed Otten from behind, and near the boards.

All leagues are looking to protect the players from career-ending neck injuries.

  14. Hoss Says:

So the boarding call (that would have ended everything) that should have been called on Otten that made Rudenko look like a rag doll thrown over the bench, was fine not to call since he faced him when he took him into the boards?

I’m fine with the one game, less than I though it would be, but how about giving the ref one game for letting the game get out of hand? I know we only have one ref and $$$ is short and blaa blaa blaa…

  16. Tony E Says:

Normally bording is not called if the player giving the hit does not leave his feet and if it is not a hit from behind.

  17. Hoss Says:

I was always taught if you had to take three strides to hit the guy, it was boarding. That could have been just an easy way for my Dad to explain it, but that was it.

  18. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

So did Brad Wingfield get a suspension too from this Rudenko hit?

I know I lost some of you…but Wingfield gets suspended in this league for everything. What about Chaser’s favorite player “Black Snake…” LOL

  19. Burgee Says:

so….what drove the rage, was he mad about the front to front hit or was it deeper? something more going on, i wouldn’t think he would hit him like that to retaliate on a clean front to front hit.

Lil Stevie and his piggies are coming to town.

Pulled pork Dinner at the Coliseum $6.75
    Premium seat $19.00
Pounding the hogs all night long…priceless

  20. Tony E Says:

Hoss it is a judgement thing. here is the book rule

A minor or major penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, based upon the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, shall be imposed on any player who checks an opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently in the boards.
(NOTE) Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-side” play which results in that player being knocked into the boards is “boarding” and must be penalized as such. In other instances where there is no contact with the boards, it should be treated as “charging”.

When a major penalty is imposed under this Rule for a foul resulting in an injury to the face or head of an opponent, a game misconduct shall be imposed.

  21. Tony E Says:

On a positive note, former Komet Don Atchison has runaway with the election and will remain as mayor of Saskatoon.

  22. Greg Says:

Anybody see where Bogunecki was traded to the Islanders. Blake, do you think he’ll get some playing time there?

  23. ilovehockey Says:

1 game suspension was sufficient. Still think Otten should have been called first, then this wouldn’t have happened. Hasn’t someone ever done or said something to you and you take offense immediately and over-react? I think that’s what happened. No ulterior motive. Bogden got creamed by Otten and just saw red that nothing was called and went after him. Plain and simple. Too severe of a hit? Probably, but adrenaline just takes over sometimes.

  24. Greg Says:

Sorry, but I don’t see that as an excuse. Stiffer punishment was required in this case.

  25. komets29fan Says:

The one game suspension was enough. Adrenaline does play a part in something like that. Sometimes you forget to think before you act. It was a mistake, but we all know that he has learned from it.

  26. ilovehockey Says:

Sorry Greg. Can’t agree with you on this one. It’s over and done, let’s move on.

  27. ilovehockey Says:

Greg, do you remember the guy that took Jason Kean out for us and got no penalty??? Now that was worth an all time suspension. He didn’t even get any call for the hit and Keaner never played again.

  28. Greg Says:

I agree, all hits like that need to be dealt with severley. That’s my take on it. There’s no room in hockey for hits from behind no matter what a player is feeling or how ticked he is at another player. Thanks for proving my point.

  29. ilovehockey Says:

LOL That’s not how you were supposed to take that. I meant that Rudenko’s hit did not injure the guy like what happened to keaner. The guy was back up and skating shortly afterward. I’m not saying that I agree with those types of hits, I don’t. I just felt that Otten got to do whatever he wanted to Rudenko and nobody cared. Maybe Rudenko should have just challenged him instead. That probably would have been better, but sometimes our better judgement goes by the wayside.

  30. Greg Says:

Now you’re heading in the right direction to see my point of view. I would have thought that the league took Otten’s hit on Rudenko into consideration and found no problem with it (just like me). Yes Kean ended up with PCSS (no, I’m not spelling it all out)but how it happen with Kean is diferent then what Rudenko did so that’s why I imagine Kean’s assailant was not suspened and Rudenko was. I don’t agree with it at all, but I can understand their way of thinking.

  31. ilovehockey Says:

Keaner was elbowed from behind head first into the boards right in front of us. Always thought that was just a plain stupid missed call. the hit was extremely violent with intent to harm. I totally agree that those types of hits are out of line. It’s a fine line knowing when to re-taliate to let them know that you’re not going to take it, and just letting it go. I sure wouldn’t want the players jobs.

  33. ilovehockey Says:

Sorry, this thing is acting up today.

  34. Greg Says:

And that’s where we agree. Kean’s call was missed, I don’t have a problem admitting that. I guess the question is, do we and/or the UHL really want to deter players from committing the penalties?

  35. chuckitt Says:

it really just comes down to this, maybe rudenko should have waited and fought later, but the whole point to look at is this, isnt it much more refreshing to see something happen? right or wrong it sure beat what we had to sit thru the last couple of years. right or wrong, it was good to see somebody stick up for themselves and lets hope it continues but with smarter retaliations!

  36. Greg Says:

I will agree to the point of smarter realiations but not with that specific incident. Yes Rudenko should have waited. This brings to mind a game with San Diego a year after the Komets won the Cup. Danielle (yes, i know it Daniel I just help myself) Shank was really giving it to John Purves. Danny Lambert squashed him up against the glass (which was beautiful and yet deserved a suspension) and later on in the game Purves got Shank back LEGALLY. Patience, it was the first game and there would have been other oppoutunities.

  37. Greg Says:

For all those how would like a small laugh check this out. My wife found this.

  40. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

Rudenko hit someone at last Saturday’s game? Wow, never heard that before. Mr. Ed is definitely dead…..

  41. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

What excuse do we hear this weekend for McWhinney sitting the bench? Isn’t this the Minor Leagues…shouldn’t we be at least attempting to develop young talent here? Could we have a promising young goaltender and not even know it? Can Kevin St. Pierre play 95% of the games this season and remain focused, sharp, and on top of his game without major injuries? I know this is a very unpopular topic with Mr. Sebring…but is it really wise to sit the backup goalie every week? Does that build confidence? Does that give him experience? Does that keep him sharp? Is this the smartest thing to do when we have an older Frenchy who suffers from injuries every year and does start looking unfocused after about 3 weeks of games?

I think Frenchy is a good Goalie…lets not burn him out a month into the season though. Give the kid a chance. K-Zoo did last season…how did that work-out again?

  42. blake Says:

Hit, who crawled up your butt and died today? Man, are you in a rotten mood. You sound like me. LOL.

  43. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

It was Enema Man of course….doing the crawling up the butt thing….LOL

I thought it was a good point.

    Play the kid all ready!

  44. JungleMonkey Says:

Gotta agree with Hit. (Somebody has to)… Really, It wouldn’t hurt Frechy to take a night off. I’m betting McWhinney doesn’t get a start until next Saturdays Port Urine Battlecats game.. What the heck is their name anyway? I know its not the Beacons.. The Flags.. Its after midnight folks.

  45. Greg Says:

It is early and the Komets haven’t had that much action. One the season gets under way where they’re play 3 in 3 or 4 in 5 then yes McWhinney should get one or two games, but This is the Komet’s 4th and 5th game. I doubt and serious stress has been put on them yet.

  46. Hit Somebody!!! Says:

Wanna be in the OHIC JM MAN? LOL I crack myself up….

  47. JungleMonkey Says:

Where did that fool go anyway?
